The Beemster was an inland lake until it was drained in 1612. In the Beemster Polder there are five forts that were part of a defensive ring: the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The Defence Line is on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Only the Fort along Nekkerweg and Fort Spijkerboor are accessible to the public.
